Local Conditions
Building in Auburn
Valley ground below, hillsides above
Auburn is a city of two landscapes. Down in the valley, lots are generally flat and the main considerations are drainage and a stable base. On the hillside neighborhoods above, such as those around Lea Hill, slope and views take over, and elevated decks, terraces and retaining walls become the way to get usable space.
On clear days, Mount Rainier is visible from many parts of the city, which is a good reason to think about orientation: where seating goes, how a pergola frames the view and what a fire feature looks like at dusk. Older neighborhoods near the center and newer developments on the edges mean the age and condition of existing yards vary widely.
What that means for the build
- Orient seating, decks and structures toward the best view
- Use walls and terracing to gain flat, usable space on slopes
- Prepare a stable base on level valley ground
- Assess how old existing landscaping and hardscape is before planning

FAQ
Auburn
Do you serve Auburn?
Yes. Auburn is in our service area. Mission Outdoor Living is based in Maple Valley and serves all of King and Pierce County. See all the areas we serve.
Can you build an elevated deck on a hillside lot?
Yes. Raised decks are a common solution on sloped lots. We review grade, access and footing conditions during the assessment, and the proposal sets out the structure, stairs, railings and materials.
Is Auburn part of your main territory?
Yes. Auburn is part of our main territory and one of the areas we actively serve from our Maple Valley base. If your property is near the edge of the city, send us the address and we will confirm.
How do I get started?
Send a request with your address, photos and a short description of the project. From there we follow the process on our Build page, beginning with a conversation about what you want the space to do.
